The Red Badge of Courage LTD Level One: 1.) What is the main idea stated in paragraph 3, p. 51? P. 51, paragraph 3- “Thoughts of his comrades came to him.” Henry was angry at those who had remained behind to defend the front line when it seemed impossible. He rationalizes that he had made the wiser choice by running and begins to criticize his comrades for staying. 2.) What does Henry’s behavior in this paragraph (3, p. 51) tell you about his character? P. 51, paragraph 3- “Thoughts of his comrades came to him.” It shows that Henry does not like to admit his faults but rather rationalizes his actions. It also shows that Henry is a very proud person because he does not admit his own cowardice but rather claims that those who did not flee were not brave but just dumb and that he, the man with “superior perceptions and knowledge”, had instead made the right choice. 3.) Did you expect Henry to run away from the fight? Why or why not? P. 47, paragraph 2- “He ran like a blind man...” Yes, I expected Henry to run because throughout the first few chapters, he was always preoccupied with his panic about future battles. His fear was obvious by the way Henry was constantly looking for someone who as also afraid so he would not be the only one. I expected that one day he would succumb to this fear and desert his regiment. 4.) Did you expect Jim Conklin to die? Why or why not?
