Sutter 1 Christine Sutter John Anderson Management: Theory Practice and Application January 8, 2011 Management and Leadership Paper: “Google Corporation- Individual Paper” Management and leadership skills are among the most important elements to a company’s success. In recent years the roles of management and what is expected from a manager has changed drastically. Innovative and young companies such as Google understand the importance of obtaining people with the skills to lead with strategic substance. In the following paragraphs I will discuss the difference between management and leadership, the roles and responsibilities managers and leaders play in creating and maintaining a healthy organizational culture, and I will then evaluate the affect that globalization and management across borders. Lastly, I will discuss strategies leaders can use to create a healthy organizational culture. In today’s corporate world organizations are not just seeking individuals who have the ability to take orders, instead they are in quest for leaders who have the capability to define a purpose and vision that produces results and creates a competitive advantage over their competition. : But in the new economy, where value comes increasingly from the knowledge of people, and where workers are no longer undifferentiated cogs in an industrial machine, management and leadership are not easily separated. People look to their managers, not just to assign them a task, but to define for them a purpose.

Sutter 2 And managers must organize workers, not just to maximize efficiency, but to nurture skills, develop talent and inspire results (Allan, 2010). These are the qualities that separate the exceptional managers from the average ones. At Google Corporation they both admire and encourage leadership among their employees and managers. This modern outlook on management is one of the reasons that Google has successfully maintained innovation and leadership in the market and more importantly within their organization. In 2007 Google was named by Fortune magazine as the 4 th most admired company in the United States, and also listed as one of the best places to work (Lyke, 2010). Google is highly admired because of their nontraditional cross-functional organizational structure, but more importantly because of their “stellar leadership and innovative management techniques” (Lyke, 2010). While managers and leaders both play a vital role in the process to achieve success, leaders offer a unique set of skills that differ from the “day to day” expectations of a manger. : Whereas management must deal with the ongoing, day-to-day complexities of organizations, true leadership includes effectively orchestrating important change. While managing required planning and budgeting routines, leading includes setting the direction (creating vision) for the firm. Management requires structuring the organization, staffing it with capable people, and monitoring
