July 11, 2008 To Who It May Concern: I am writing this letter to support Vu Hoang Duong in his application for a scholarship. Duong is in my American Government class this summer at the Center for International Education in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Duong is an excellent student in the course. In American Government, he has written and made an excellent presentation on a current U.S. senator, Jack Reed of Rhode Island. His paper and presentation included Reed’s biography, his key votes in the Senate, the sources of Reed’s campaign funds, and important interest group ratings of Reed (e.g. by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Family Research Council). In addition, he explained Reed’s likelihood of being re-elected in 2008. Duong regularly participates in class, which I appreciate. All students are required to bring in

As an example of his attitude and enthusiasm in the course, Duong actually explained his article to the class; he didn’t just read it to the class as a chore. I have taught American Government many times in the United States, and I know that my assignments can be difficult for American students. The quality of Duong’s work was especially impressive in that he has never lived in the American political environment. I strongly support Duong’s application for a scholarship.
