UNDERGRADUATE COOPERATION PROGRAM HANDOUT 14 Subject code: ENGL 1301 WRITING A RESEARCH PAPER Subject name: Composition 1 Instructor: Tô Minh Thanh, Ph.D. The process of writing a research paper can be devided into six steps : Step 1 : Select a topic that you can readily research Researching at a Local Library First of all , go to the subjects section of your library book file (as described on the textbook’s page 372) and try to find at least three books on your general topic, parenting , for example. Next go to the periodicals file in your library (as described on the textbook’s pages 375-378) to see if there are a fair number of magazine , newspaper , or journal articles on your subject. Researching on the Internet Use the Internet to determine if resources are available for your topics. The first step is to go to the subjects section of a large online bookseller to find relevant books. Two of the largest online booksellers are Barnes and Noble and Amazon Books . Next determine if magazine or newspaper articles on your topics are available online. If both books and articles are available, pursue your topic. Otherwise you may have to choose another topic. You cannot write a topic for which research materials are not readily available. Step 2 : Limit your topic make the purpose of your paper clear Read through books and articles to look for ways to limit your general topic. Subject headings and related headings , as well as book and article titles , may may be of great help to you in narrowing your topic. Take advantage of them.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
