Two Medical Jobs – Topic by Topic Contrast Essay (from The Resourceful Writer: A Basic Writing Course by Barnwell/Dees p. 173) I have worked as an x-ray technician in a hospital and as an x-ray technician in a private physician’s office. Most people probably think working in a small, quiet doctor’s office would be preferable to working at a hospital, but it is not. After working in both places, I’ll take the hospital any time. Surprisingly, the doctor’s office where I used to work was either always deadly dull or fast- paced and hectic. The doctor was frequently out of the office, causing tiresome delays until he returned from hospital duty. Because the office was run to make a profit, the work was rushed, and I was not able to take my time with each patient. It was like an assembly line. “Get ‘em in, and get ‘em out,” I was told. Lunchtime was a problem, too. If I did not bring my lunch, I had to go to a fast-food restaurant that was expensive and served terrible food. There were no fringe benefits, no health insurance, no reimbursement for uniforms, not even free parking. The worst thing was that I not only had to do x-ray work, but also practically everything that had to be done – from answering the phone to bringing the doctor coffee. In the hospital, where I am working now, I am also very busy, but the job is more satisfying.
