Miss Brill 1. The title “Miss Brill” gives off many clues and meanings depending on how one interpretates it. The main and most important fact being that Miss. Brill is not a “Mrs” and therefore isn’t married, and neither is she a widow. Based on the time period of the story, this was a very unpleasant position to be in. 2. The story takes place on a bright spring day during a Sunday, in a park called the “Jardins Publiques”. The name of the park hints towards the story taking place in France. At the end of the story, we are also taken to Miss Brill’s home where her distressed heart is uncovered. According to the fact that Miss Brill was published by Katherine Mansfield in 1920, the story must have taken place in the early 1900’s. 3. Miss Brill sees the entire world as a stage where we are merely actors. She believes that all people should play their part in this world alongside each other. Through this mindset, Miss Brill has constructed her own reality in which she plays a significant role that others notice and find important.
