Johnston 1 Dustin Johnston Professor VandeZande English 165.022 November 20, 2007 Creationism in the Classroom             For many years now, there has been much controversy over whether or not to teach creationism side-by- side with evolution. This controversy has centered mainly on the assumption that creationism and evolution are  based upon the same scientific data. This assumption is entirely wrong. Creationism is defined as "the doctrine  that matter and all things were created, substantially as they now exist, by an omnipotent Creator, and not  gradually evolved or developed." This clearly shows that creationism is based on religious bias rather than being  based on scientific fact. I believe that, due to the fact that creationism is based on religious beliefs and not  scientific fact, creationism has no place in tax-funded public schools. The reason for this is clearly represented  in the first amendment of the United States Declaration of Independence.          Forcing tax-funded public schools to teach creationism is simply preposterous. If it were made mandatory  for creationism to be taught in public schools, then the inverse of this must also be made mandatory. Imagine  walking up to every single Christian, Islamic , Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist or any other religious building and

Johnston 2 telling the head of any of these religious organizations that they must teach evolution in a non biased way  every time they have a meeting. Also, that every single painting or picture of Allah, Jesus, or Buddha must be  side-by-side with a picture of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution. For many people it is hard to envision
