Dustin Johnston October 18, 2007 English 165.022 Professor VandeZande Problem- Solution Essay Proposal One of the biggest problems facing the United States today is the contentious lowering of standards for our public schools. Everyone concentrates on the big picture but what the need to be looking at is the deep underlying problem that usually stems to the bigger problems. In our public schools are teachers that think they have a dream of teaching students and then get burned out but decide to keep teaching because its all they know how to do; we have students who can obtain a high school diploma that do not know how to read and write or even do simple math problems. We have different standards for different types of students, we do not need ten different standards to test you on depending on your state of mental fitness. The No Child Left Behind Act was a good first step to fixing our public school system but it is not enough. During the past decade schools have made “new” math, English and science classes to help their
