CHAPTER 9: GENDER AND SEXUALITY SECTION 1 Female-Male Similarities and Differences o Sex : the biological characteristics with which we were born Chromosomes, anatomy, hormones o Gender: learned attitudes and behaviors that characterize people of one sex or the other o Gender identity: a perception of self as either male or female o Gender roles: characteristics, attitudes, feeling, and behaviors that society SECTION 2 Contemporary Gender Stratification Contemporary gender stratification and inequality o Sexism - an attitude or behavior that discriminates against one sex, usually women, based on assumed superiority of the other sex o Gender stratification - people's unequal access to wealth, power, status, prestige, and to the values resources o Examples of gender inequality Me are considered to do more housework but women actually do more Men are hired as professors while elementary school teacher are usually women Sex segregation still exist between and within occupation
