Sabrina Exum SYG2000_001 The movie “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006) illustrates the biggest subculture in the United States, if not the world, and that is the fashion subculture. Fashion is one of the most dominant subcultures in the United States. Even though it is a subculture it is perceived as a dominant culture. This subculture is very focused on the individual and looks. Everyone who is a member of the subculture seems to rule over the main culture, which is heavily demonstrated in the movie. Andrea, the new assistant for Miranda Priestly, is a frumpy, unstylish girl. She is looked down upon from everyone in the fashion magazine’s office, especially from the other assistant, Emily, and the editor in chief, Miranda Priestly. This also illustrates how focused the subculture is on looks of the individual. When Nigel and Andrea are eating lunch during their break he says, “cellulite is the main ingredient in corn chowder”( The Devil…) when Andrea takes a scoop of the chowder onto her plate.
