This week completes our transition from discussing the  individual filmmaking disciplines to studying individual  films as a whole. With one borderline exception, the films discussed thus  far tell stories contained within the frame; they produce  the illusion of reality. This week and next week’s film acknowledge the  process of fiction storytelling by breaking from  convention, even “breaking the fourth wall.”

Comic heir to screen clowns like Buster  Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and Groucho Marx. A TV writer and comic, his film career began  as star and maker of gag-based comedies  before maturing and producing more  critically acclaimed work. Moved on to using a familiar comic persona  as a vehicle to explore social mores and  inner angst of contemporary urban-dwellers. Key Films:
