Annie Hall  (1977),  Blue Velvet  (1986),   Run Lola Run  (1998),  and  Amélie  (2001) all foreground narrative technique and the  artifice of cinematic storytelling. The Celebration  (1998) and other Dogme 95 films, eschew  technology and “cosmetics” in favor of self-imposed limitations  designed to “force the truth out of characters and settings.” In today’s film, the interaction between foregrounded technique,  self-imposed limitations, and formal craftsmanship, become the  explicit focal point of the story.

We’ll examine  The Five Obstructions  (2003), in which  director Lars von Trier, one of the original Dogme brethren,  attempts to force his mentor, Jørgen Leth, to make an  “imperfect” film.
