Lecture 4: January 31, 2008 Rise of plate tectonics was the convergent theory. Subduction zone - East coast is in the passive margin, but there are tectonic activity - lithosphere, shove it into the athenosphere and recycle it into magna - Densities - Ocean crust 3.2 g/m3 - Continental crust 2.7 g/m3 - ocean crust is heavier than the continental crust - ocean crust; - continental; igneous rocks generated by slow consolidation - subduction creates earthquakes - break up of lithosphere, quiet violent earthquakes - volcanic eruptions - southeast asia, japan - product of a back arc basin - oceanic crust is pulling continental crust, where they meet in the subduction zone and make trenches The ring of fire - Atlantic is opening; Pacific is closing. - Boundaries around Pacific are convergent boundaries. - Volcanism is distributed around the ring of fire--parameter of the pacific ocean Collision zone - Oceanic basin will eventually close up. -
