The concept of Critical Periods - Neural template hypothesis – Marler o Birds are predisposed to learn their own species-specific song o Tutoring birds with multiple species tapes → birds learn their own species-specific song - Controversy: Social Tutoring (Luis Baptista) o Observed that white-crowned sparrows sometimes sang other species-specific songs in nature o He showed that is WCS were presented with a Song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) in the flesh (a social tutor), then young bird would learn Song sparrow song o Is the Neural template hypothesis an artifact of rearing conditions? - Baptista: What influence might social interaction have? o Must bring in social tutor o Bird is learning from other birds in environment o With swamp sparrow tutor the babies learned this sparrows song o Showed that providing birds with socially interactive tutors increased the length of the critical period for song learning - Other influences/variations on critical periods o Canaries: learn new songs throughout life o o Photoperiod can also influence the timing of the critical period (e.g., marshwrens – o Cowbirds – nest parasites; sing the song of cowbirds, not the host Why? Cowbirds raised in isolation of other cowbirds sang songs that were more appealing to
