HISPANIC AMERICAN DIVERSITY 2 Hispanic American Diversity Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, Mexican Americans, and El Salvadorians all have various similarities. All ethnicities traditionally speak Spanish, are Catholic, and hold family to the highest regard. Each ethnicity has assimilated well into American mainstream with each group possessing its own strengths and weaknesses. Puerto Rican education is within the family providence. Puerto Ricans view instruction and education in different ways. In the Puerto Rican community, education is learning manners such as politeness, respectfulness, and cordiality, whereas instruction is taught via a school or book. Preparing for college is often tackled by placing children in private schools. Elementary education is legally mandated in Puerto Rico, making private schools a viable option (Advameg, INC, 2011). Politically, the biggest issue at the table is whether or not Puerto Rico will become a state. The House of Representatives past year passed the Puerto Rico Democracy act. This act allows residents of Puerto to play an active role in deciding the future status for the commonwealth by having the ability to hold referendums (Hill, 2011). The Cuban American community has assimilated well within the United States with community size playing a key factor. Between 1989 and 1990, 78% of all Cuban Americans were registered voters. In 1988, 67% of all Cuban American registered voters, voted in the presidential election (Bluffington, 2011). The Cuban American National Foundation has prevented successfully many bills, appointments, and judges that the Cuban American community opposed.
