ETHNIC GROUPS AND DISCRIMINATION 2 Ethnic Groups and Discrimination Nineteenth century Irish immigrants encountered racism, discrimination, and prejudiced views. The Irish began moving to the United States mainly during the time of the potato famine (Gavin, 2000). From the time they stepped from the ships, the Irish immigrants faced segregation and discrimination. Dual labor, institutional discrimination, double jeopardy, redlining, and glass ceilings were obstacles the Irish faced. The Irish faced numerous hurdles throughout the years, never giving in, but standing united and strong, until eventually proving their worth in the American workforce. The rush of Irish immigrants began in the mid-nineteenth century when the potato famine swept the country (Gavin, 2000). The Irish immigrants had to make the choice to either leave Ireland or starve to death. The famine brought forth death, devastation, and starvation to the land. The assistance from neighboring countries was nonexistent, leaving only the option to flee or die. Over the next several years millions of Irish natives immigrated to America (Curtis, 2007). The American people, displeased with the Irish masses coming into the ports, immediately began to discriminate against the immigrants. The Americans laughed at the Irish
