Why Should the Client Disclose? To let counselor know what has been occurring in the client’s life and how the client thinks and feels about these events; To encourage the client to gain some feeling of relief through the process of talking about problems; To encourage the client to develop a clearer definition of his or her concerns and greater understanding about exactly what is disturbing; To help the client begin to connect components of his or her story that may lead to new insight.

What Clients Bring to the Counseling Experience Many enter counseling voluntarily because they are aware of tension, anxiety, confusion, or lack of closure. Some clients are reluctant because they don’t acknowledge their need for help and are pressured by a third party to make initial contact with the counselor. Even willing, voluntary clients are often hesitant, due to anxiety, resistance, cultural factors, or shame.
