EAS207 Engineering Mechanics STATICS Name Spring 2002 Midterm Examination #2 Duration: Two hours (120 minutes) Open Books, Notes & Other stuff. No Neighborly Participation (any collaboration will result in expelling both parties from the exam resulting in a grade of zero) Problem 1 (20 pts) Inspect the space truss in Figure 1, which has a fixed socket hinge at E, a sliding support at C and a limited sliding support at D - sliding in z direction only . (Information omitted in class) Determine: a) Is the space truss indeterminate, determinate or unstable? Justify by computation. b) If you remove bar EA, is the truss indeterminate, determinate or unstable? c) If you remove bars EA and CD, is the truss indeterminate, determinate or unstable? d) Which of the above cases you may be able to solve?
