1104 chapter 11 BLOOD FUNCTIONS OF BLOOD: 1. Transportation 2. protection 3. temperature regulation BLOOD: consists of 1. Plasma—liquid matrix—55% of total volume of blood 2. Formed elements---RBC, WBC, Platelets ---45% of total volume of blood RBC---Erthyrocytes---- Functions: transport oxygen to different parts of body WBC—Leukocytes ---defend the body against disease and remove wastes, toxins, and damage abnormal cells. WBC are nucleated and are produced in red bone marrow. Platelets---Thrombocytes ---functions in blood clotting PLASMA: consists of 93% water and 7% dissolved substances (ions, dissolved gases, hormones, plasma proteins, and waste products) PLASMA PROTEINS : include 1. albumins —needed for the water balancing properties of plasma 2. globulins —that transport lipids and fat-soluble vitamins 3. clotting proteins— fibrinogen STEM CELLS : give rise to the formed elements such as WBC, RBC and platelets. Stem cells are the undifferenciated cells in red bone marrow that give rise to all the formed elements. Stem cells divided and they become specialized. RED BLOOD CELLS (erythrocytes) 1. small, biconcave disks, without nucleus 2. The red color is due to a pigment, hemoglobin 3. produced in red bone marrow 4. Function: transport oxygen and help transport carbon dioxide 5. 4-6 million RBC/mm3 volume of blood Hemoglobin: 1. also known as respiratory pigment (because it transports oxygen) 2. When hemoglobin combines with oxygen it forms oxyhemoglobin (red in color) hemoglobin without oxygen is called deoxyhemoglobin (dark purple in color) 3. Oxyhemoglobin forms in lungs where oxygen combines with hemoglobin,
