Using language appropriately means adapting to a particular occasion, audience and topic at hand. 7. It is important for a public speaker to use inclusive language because a speaker does not want to stereotype, demean, or patronize people on the basis of gender, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or other factors. The five usages of inclusive language are avoiding the generic he, dropping the use of man when referring to both men and women, refraining from stereotyping jobs and social roles by gender, avoiding identifying personal traits that are unrelated to the topic, and using names that groups use to identify themselves....
