Review Questions 1. Language helps shape our sense of reality by not only mirroring reality, but by giving meaning to events. 2. The difference between denotative and connotative meaning is that denotative is precise, literal and objective, while, connotative meanings are more variable, figurative and subjective. To convey my message effectively, I’d use connotative meanings if I wanted to reach out to emotions and feelings. I would use denotative meanings if I wanted to be more business oriented. 3. The four criteria for using language effectively in your speeches are using language accurately, vividly, appropriately, and using inclusive language. 4. Three things you should use to use language clearly are to use familiar words, choose concrete words, and to eliminate clutter.

Using language appropriately means adapting to a particular occasion, audience and topic at hand. 7. It is important for a public speaker to use inclusive language because a speaker does not want to stereotype, demean, or patronize people on the basis of gender, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or other factors. The five usages of inclusive language are avoiding the generic he, dropping the use of man when referring to both men and women, refraining from stereotyping jobs and social roles by gender, avoiding identifying personal traits that are unrelated to the topic, and using names that groups use to identify themselves....
