Hotel California The Eagles Hotel California written by The Eagles is much more than a song with a good beat. All together, with the songs' many meanings, one could interpret the overall meaning to be about man's struggle with temptation and sin. Each one of the deadly sins (Pride, Envy, Gluttony, wrath, Greed, Lust, and Sloth) are mentioned in the work proving that they "are all just prisoners, of [their] own device". "They", being man that wallows in these "deadly" sins, just want to "live it up at the Hotel California", instead of live god's will. Heavily mentioned are the sins dealing with drug use and abuse. THC, a hallucinogenic drug used during the 60's and 70's, could be one of the drugs hinted at in the phrase "The Hotel California"(THC). The Hotel is the place where the speaker takes a journey or "trip". The "warm smell of Colitas" that rises through the air could be the smell of another hallucinogenic drug that people used during the 60's and 70's to escape the realities of the world and substitute them for whatever style of life they wanted.
