Date: November 29, 2009 To: Elota Patton From: Matthew Fisher 10am Subject: Electronic Data Interchange at Computer Tech According to their website, Computer Tech is a Texas based computer consulting firm that focuses on forming business solutions for managing, accessing, and optimizing the needs of a modern IT environment. They are specialists in servers, system and storage consolidation, desktop and laptop deployment, network infrastructure, and web-based applications. My father, Paul Fisher, is the controller and CFO for the company and can be reached at (281) 444-5566 or pfisher@computertech.com. During the interview we discussed various technologies from customer management databases to specialized accounting systems, but the most interesting of these technologies was their use of electronic data interchange (also referred to as EDI) and its impact on the business. EDI is used to transfer documents electronically from one computer to another. It improves efficiency and reduces error probability over time. At Computer Tech 60- 70% of the work is now paperless and they were able to cut storage and labor costs significantly. The business impact from EDI has changed the process from start to finish. The sales personnel first finds the customer and takes the order.
