Sensation is the electric impulses and stimuli we receive from our environment. Satrock defines it as “the process of receiving stimulus energies from the environment” (176). Santrock defines perception as “the brain’s process of organizing and interpreting sensory information to give it meaning” (177). It is what we perceive of the outside world internally. Perception is created by the message that sensation brings to the brain.

Aside from the five senses of smell, sight, taste, touch and sound—humans are able to also detect and respond to heat, pain, acceleration, balance, and orientation. The human skin is the largest sensory system. Thermoreceptors below the surface of the skin detect increases and decreases in temperature. Pain is the sensation that warns us that our body is in danger. Vestibular sense informs the body of its balance and movement. Kinesthetic senses— located in the joints and muscle fibers—tell the body about its movement, posture, and orientation. The human body recognizes a change in acceleration from a constant. Though it cannot feel the earth move beneath them, it can tell when it is moving versus when it is still. Vestibular and kinesthetic senses work together to coordinate proprioceptive feedback which informs the brain about the position of limbs and body parts in relation to each other. Semicircular canals in the ear contain sensory receptors that detect the position and movement of the head.
