The air is cooled naturally. When air cools to the dew point, the air is saturated with water (100% humidity). Sponge example: squeeze sponge to reduce it's ability to hold water. In the atmosphere, chilling air beyond the dew point is like squeezing the sponge--it reduces the air's ability to hold water forcing water vapor molecules to change state to form water or ice crystals. Nighttime cooling chills air. Ground surface becomes cold as it loses longwave radiation. Precipitation occurs when a substantial mass of air experiences a steady drop in temperature below the dew point.
