Unformatted text preview: higher dew point temperature than dry air. The Adiabatic Process What makes the water vapor held in the air turn into liquid or solid particles that can fall to the Earth? The air is cooled naturally. When air cools to the dew point, the air is saturated with water (100% humidity). Sponge example: squeeze sponge to reduce it's ability to hold water. In the atmosphere, chilling air beyond the dew point is like squeezing the sponge--it reduces the air's ability to hold water forcing water vapor molecules to change state to form water or ice crystals. Nighttime cooling chills air. Ground surface becomes cold as it loses longwave radiation. Precipitation occurs when a substantial mass of air experiences a steady drop in temperature below the dew point. Happens when air parcel is lifted to higher level in the atmosphere Adiabatic processes Related to the movement of air packages upward and downward Remember the NORMAL LAPSE RATE (6.4C/1000m) Also have the Dry adiabatic lapse rate (DALR) 10C/1000m (5.5F/1000ft) Rate at which rising air is cooled by expansion when no condensation...

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
