How American Criminal Justice Reflects the Themes of Disneyization Matthew Robinson In this article Robinson illustrates how the criminal justice system has become greatly influenced by a phenomenon known as “disneyization.” First noted by Bryman in 1999, disneyization is defined as “the process by which the principles of the Disney theme parks are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world.” Disneyization is part of the phenomenon of “globalization” or the global culture of consumption.” It is also related to McDonaldization by which elements of the fast food restaurant also permeate among all sectors of the not only the country, but the world. This trend “effects” criminology and criminal justice through “America's capitalistic culture,” yet is rarely the focus of criminologists and social scientist when “predicting future societal trends” and “documenting past and current trends, including criminogenic trends.” There are four components of disneyization that have attributed to the “power and influence over our culture.” These are theming, dedifferentiation of consumption, merchandising, and emotional labor. Theming is “the packaging of images to attract people and sell products.” Dedifferentiation of consumption indicates “the general trend whereby the forms of consumption associated with different institutional spheres become interlocked with each other and increasingly difficult to distinguish.” In other words, as it relates to criminal justice, “consumers become more interested in economic concerns than concerns about doing justice and
