The Principles of Scientific Management Frederick Winslow Taylor In your own words write a lectio on the philosophy of Scientific Management by Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1815). then (and if you wish to use of Denhardt's views, write a desputatio critiquing his theory and concluding with a determinatio of what Taylor should have included to make is theory better balanced and more useful. Through scientific management, Taylor hopes to demonstrate that the interests of both the employer and employee are not “antagonistic.” Taylor proposed his scientific management or “task management” theory as a consequence of the great negative impact of the phenomenon known as “soldiering,” which increases the cost of production and decreases the ability for a company to compete in the marketplace. Soldiering is basically underworking on the part of the employees, in which they “deliberately work slow so as to avoid doing a full day's work” (p.3). Taylor proposed three “causes” for this type of behavior displayed in the workplace. First, according to Taylor, the workers falsely believe that “a material increase in the output of each man or each machine in the trade would result in the end in throwing a large number of men out of work.” The second reason was due to “the defective systems of management” in which the workers know more about how to perform a task than the managers themselves. Since there is no need to rely on management the workers are allowed to “take it easy,” while keeping management ignorant of how fast the work can actually be done. Thirdly, this behavior can be contributed to “the inefficient rule-of- thumb methods.” According to Taylor, these methods include “unnecessary motions” and “slow and inefficient motions” that are commonplace among the traditional work style. Nonetheless, these reasons in which Taylor states soldiering occurs seem as if the worker is making a conscious decision to do so; however, I would suggest that it may be more likely due to unconscious actions on the part of the worker as a result of psychological conditioning and learning. 1

Furthermore, despite Taylor's explanations for soldiering, I still do not understand the “logic” behind it. What justification could a person have for not getting the job done right the first time and in a timely manner-which is how I was taught to work by my parents- other than being lazy? I have relatively little respect for people who approach work this way. Soldiering in my opinion undermines self-respect and self-worth; therefore, it becomes difficult for me to understand why someone would engage in this behavior. People should take pride in their work, not for the approval of the employer or anyone else for that matter, but for their own self-esteem, respect for themselves and for the sense of accomplishment and self-worth that it produces.
