Alicia Deal 11-13-01 HNR231 Written Assignment #2 Many people do place a strong emphasis on gender. However, “the times are a changing” as more people are beginning to realize that a person is more than just his/her gender. I grew up not really giving it any thought. I may have fallen prey to gender stereotypes, but I never stopped to think about it or the possible consequences. At home, my parents always told my little sister and me that we could be anything we wanted to be. They actually preferred that we be anything but housewives, passive, and obeying the commands of men. Of course, my parents are very protective of my sister and me, but it’s not because they see us as being fragile and weak; they just don’t trust anyone else. My father even taught us how to fight and protect ourselves. In my family, both parents work, or did work--my father no longer works since he was in a work accident over four years ago; he stays home and takes care of my three cousins, while my mom works. My sister and I always had to work hard,
