Alicia Deal 11-20-01 HNR231 Written Assignment #4 A child is greatly influenced by the attitudes of his/her parents, including gender roles in the workplace. Growing up both my parents worked hard and demanding hours. My father usually did hard labor, while my mom worked in an office. When I was first born, my mom was what one would consider a housewife and she continued going to college. However, poverty was difficult to ignore, so she quit school and got a job to help with the financial burdens and she has been working ever since. For a time, both worked forty hours a week, sometimes even more. The quality time they were able to spend with their two wonderful daughters influenced us greatly. My sister and I were able to have a childhood that was challenging to say the least but the life situations made our respect and love for our family even greater if that was possible. We all helped with the chores and cooking and we never considered it to be a burden. We did not look on any of it as a “man’s job” or a “woman’s job”.
