There has a considerable amount of controversy about the marketing of tobacco products, especially due to increasing evidence that cigarettes causes cancer, even death, and the nicotine in these products is addictive. Also added to the controversy, is the evidence suggesting that tobacco companies are using ads to appeal and attract children. Despite this, tobacco companies still declare that their freedom of speech is being breached. According to the "cancer stick" companies, government regulations and bans on their advertisements and endorsements are against the law. Before the introduction of Joe Camel, only 0.5% of smokers between the seventh and twelfth grades smoked camels. However, studies show that after three years in which Joe Camel advertisements were shown, that now 32.8% of smokers under age eighteen chose Camels. In addition to that, 97.7% of children recognized the Joe Camel cartoon character, compared to only 72.2% recognition by adults. Also the children were more successful in
