Certain percent yields are abnormally high-such as 130.3%, while some are abnormally low-such as 16.55%. Human error is the explanation for the variation in the results. Perhaps some of the salicylic acid was spilt or measured incorrectly. Also, the salicylic acid might not have dissolved all the way. It is possible that the product did not dry completely after using the Buchner filter. 2. The Characterization of Aspirin and Salicylic Acid The Ferric Chloride Test was used to identify the presence of phenols. To identify the presence of phenols, a color change must be used to identify the nature of the functional group or hydrocarbon chains attached to the aromatic ring. The stock aspirin, the

Again, in all three cases, there were gas bubbles, proving them to be organic acids. 3. Exercise-Aspiring Expiration Dates Aspirin should have an expiration date. Usually, there is change in color or smell when aspirin expires. For example, if the aspirin smells like vinegar, it means that the salicylic acid has decomposed, and the aspirin is expired. 4.
