NAME: Roshni Sheth FILM: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington 1. What is the goal of the film? What do you believe are the director’s motives and what is the message he/she is sending? The goal of the film is to show that people with good morals, such as Jefferson Smith, can prevail in a corrupt environment, such as the Senate as it is portrayed in the film. The director uses the President of the Senate’s character to support Jefferson Smith. It is obvious through the President’s facial expressions and actions that he wants to rid the Senate of all of its corruption, but he cannot prove anything without any evidence, so he must wait to Jefferson Smith to make his case for change. 2. What ethical argument may refute the message? Why? An ethical argument that may refute the message of the film is that fact the many of the Senators may started out with the best intentions, just like Jefferson Smith, and been corrupted along the way. It is arguable that it is unethical to make the audience feel so optimistic that one person can make a difference in the world. However, it is also arguable that it is unethical to portray the
