Roshni Sheth Sharon Powell AP English Literature 10 April, 2009 AP Poetry Project: Biography (Emily Dickinson) Emily Dickinson’s personal life offer great insight into the underlying themes and messages of her poetry (Miller). Her poems display her thoughts and opinions on faith, love, and just life in general. Dickinson was born in 1830, and she had one brother William and one sister Lavinia. Growing up, Dickinson’s father was in the public eye, as he was a prominent lawyer and fairly involved in politics (“Emily”). Dickinson often questioned the character of both her mother and father, as can be seen in one of her first letters to Thomas Wentworth Higginson. “She spoke cryptically of both parents, describing them in far from complimentary terms: ‘My Mother does not care for thought--and Father, too busy with his Briefs--to notice what we do--He buys me many Books--but begs me not to read them--because he fears they joggle the Mind’” (Wilder).
