Roshni Sheth Sharon Powell AP English Literature 27 March, 2009 AP Poetry Project: Poem Summaries (Emily Dickinson) 1. #324: “Some keep the Sabbath going to Church” This poem addresses the fact that some people think that you have to go to church to have a relationship with god. Dickinson says she can do this from her own home. She hears her sermons from God himself. They are much clearer because there is no room for misinterpretation. She can have a simple service in her home. Also, she is already feeling parts of Heaven, instead of getting there in just one instance. 2. #435: “Much Madness is divinest Sense” This poem questions what sanity really is. Madness is seen as what the majority thinks is odd. If you are mad in the majority’s eyes, you will be outcast. Things that may make sense to the majority may actually be the craziest. Going against this norm, and standing up for what makes sense, will lead to dire consequences. 3.
