Roshni Sheth Physician Salary Fact Sheet Specialty Percent distribution of active physicians, 2007 Mean annual wage, May 2010 Internal Medicine 20.1% $189,480 Family medicine/general practice 12.4% $173,860 Pediatrics 9.6% $165,720 (U.S. Department of, 2011) In the U.S., newly trained male doctors earn an average of $16,819 more a year than their female counterparts. From 1999 to 2008, the pay gap widened from 12.5% to 17% (Roehr, 2011). Physician salaries are shifting from fixed, guaranteed salaries to incentive-driven salaries Salaries are now depending on productivity, on-call hours, administrative duties, specialty, guaranteed compensation, etc .(Fields, May). In 2005, the average income of a rural physician had 13% more purchasing power than that of an urban physician after local cost of living is accounted for (Reschovsky, & Staiti, January).
