Unformatted text preview: EXAM 2 REVIEW SHEET History of Islam The roles of 7 th century geography, social and economic structures, and religions in the development/establishment of Islam-Arabia had a pretty poor economy and weak social structure-lots of Nomadic tribes -predominant religions in Arabia were Judaism, Christianity, Ancestor worship, polytheism and animism Mono/polytheism Religions of the 6/7 th century-Judaism-christianity-ancestory worship-animism (belief that animals have souls, perform rituals for them)-polytheism Three Abrahamic Religions-Islam-Christianity-Judaism Proselytizing religions-the act of attempting to convert people to another opinion and, particularly, another religion Examples: Christianity Islam Judaism Hira-a cave in Mount An-Nur outside of Mecca where Muhammad had his first revelation from Allah-the archangel Gabriel appeared to him Ramadan-Month of fasting in Islamic Religion-9 th month of the Islamic Calendar-In recognition of the first time the Koran was revealed to Mohammad -Extra prayer, fasting from sun up till sun down, refrain from sex. -Starts on crescent moon, and can last 29-30 days Mecca and Medina-Muhammad was born in Mecca-forced to flee to Medina after assassination attempt -the Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca all Muslims are to make at least once in their life-Battle of Badr and the Trench between Muslim led Muhammad and the Meccans was a huge battle...Mecca eventually falls and converts to Islam 2 years later Literal meaning of Islam-Submission to God-Islam is a way of life, not just a religion Kaaba-the cube-shaped building in Mecca that all Muslims pray to-built by Abraham and his son Ishmael The Black Stone-Cornerstone of the Kaaba-Is the stone a meteorite?-been around since the time of Adam and Eve Four ages of Islam 1. Righteous Caliphs (632-661)-civil war and division in Islam 2. Early/Classical Islam (661-1258)-Koran written-Sharia Law-Islamics had jurisprudence-the culture flourished and spread 3. Later Empires 4. Modern Period (1750-) Differences b/w Sunni and Shia Islam Sunni:-Supported Abu Bakr, friend of Muhammad and military leader -Leadership should be given to those who demonstrate leadership potential-No formal clergy- scholars & jurists-85-90% of current global Muslim population Shiite:-Supported Ali ibnAbiTalib, cousin & son-in-law of Muhammad -Leadership should be a birthright-Imam (clergy): Believe in spiritual leadership inherit Muhammads revelation/light--Controversy: some claim last known descendant of Muhammad was killed at age 4 in 873 AD-10-15% of current global Muslim population Imam-clergy of the Shiite-they believed in spiritual leadership, and that you inherit Muhammads revelation/light -leadership was a birthright Golden Age of Islam-The proselytizing of Islam flourished -Mid 8 th mid 13 century -Spread Islam throughout mid.
