Case 6 – Advanced Topics Cellular Line Construction at MH Assembly MH Assembly is a contract operation that assembles products for OEMs. The company has recently won a major contact to assemble a high-tech break control mechanism used by 4 large automotive braking system manufacturers. MH receives raw materials from vendors certified by the OEMS and assembles the mechanisms in its Columbia S.C. plant. Each mechanism is individually packaged and shipped to the OEM via common carrier. The industrial engineering staff at MH developed a high-speed 14 workstation flow line for assembling the mechanism. Since demand for the part averages 5000 units per day and the plant works three 7-hour shifts (takt time: (3(7)3600)/5000 = 15.12 seconds), each workstation was designed to contain no more than 13 seconds of work content. The remaining 2.12 seconds reserved for transportation time between the workstations. Processing Steps Tasks required at each processing step Work content in seconds Equipment 1.
