To the Editor: Genetic engineering has become increasingly popular in today’s culture. Procedures involving IVF, stem cells and human cloning are becoming a part of people’s everyday language. However the term designer babies has sparked much controversy in the ethical aspects of today’s world. The primary reason we can pre select our baby’s gender today is if it has any sex linked genetic disorders such as muscular dystrophy or turner’s syndrome. The most common methods used for such gender selection process are the PGD/IVF and microsort. These methods are used in seperating the X chromosomes from the Y chromosomes and then sorting the X chromosomes with their respective X or Y chromosomes to either make a boy or a girl. These gender selection methods have been used to treat medical disorders presently, but an overwhelming majority of the cases have started to become families who approach doctors for their family balancing.
