Joseph J. Martocchio Course Description: A critical aspect of human resource management is the attraction and retention of high-quality employees who contribute to organizational success. Employee reward systems are a key element of this process. In this class, we will examine how compensation systems relate to organizational strategy, competitive advantage, bases of pay, and the use of non-monetary reward systems. Class time will consist of lectures, discussions, and in class exercises. Supplementary readings will be assigned throughout the semester. In order to make our daily discussions more interesting and meaningful, you need to have read the assigned material before coming to class . Cold calling may be employed in order to facilitate class discussion. This course will: 1. Provide you with extensive knowledge of different forms of employee compensation, including intrinsic, extrinsic, monetary, and non-monetary, as well as discretionary and non- discretionary employee benefits. 2. Teach you how to effectively implement these types of rewards into a comprehensive compensation system for a fictional company through the use of a semester long team simulation. 3. Prepare you to transfer this learning to real-life situations through increasing your knowledge of the effects and implications of utilizing various forms of compensation. Course Requirements: Group Case Study (60%) – During the first few weeks of class you will be assigned to groups that you will work with throughout the semester in order to complete the case study called “Building Strategic Compensation Systems”. The case study is divided into 3 sections, and each section will be worth 20% of your final course grade. Requirements for the case study will be discussed in more detail as the semester progresses.
