Dissolve, Field Calculations & Creating Graphs; Raster vs. Vector Data Dissolve Procedure § Review Gorr/Kurland, Tutorial 3 (‘GIS Outputs’) and Tutorial 8 (‘Spatial Data Processing’). § Dissolve extracts one or more fields from a larger set of fields to aggregate data (e.g., from tracts to districts, from districts to counties). o Dissolve erases the boundaries of adjacent polygons (e.g., districts) that share the same value for the specified attribute. o E.g., use dissolve to reduce demographic data for the 50 U.S. states into a data set’s ‘region’ fields Preliminary . § In ArcCatalog, preview mdtgr2 (table, geography; mdtgr2 was created in Assignment 2 via a table join and selecting block groups with population>0) and examine its metadata (especially ‘Spatial Reference Information’). § In ArcCatalog, Excel, or other statistical software, check for possible data errors (e.g., adding up “Race,” gender, and housing tenure categories to make sure that each series sums to the appropriate total number of observations).
