ENGR 13100 Fall 2010 ENGR13100 - Homework #5 Answer Sheet Name: Alex Cho Section No. 09 Team No. 24 Date: 9/24/10 Problem 1 - Individual School of Biomedical Engineering There are new materials such as plastic and carbon fiber that make the prosthesis lighter and stronger. More realistic materials of prosthesis can be used for the part that is more exposed. As technology begins to advance, the prosthesis limb has been developing rapidly and becoming more natural and useful. Some alternative solutions to prosthesis limb: Myoelectric limb, which can conduct electricity through the muscle movement and can predict the attempted movement of that artificial part, is too costly (about $10, 000 to $15,000). Another disadvantage is that the Myoelectric limb is very expensive and needs to be replaced every three to four years. On the other hand, the Transhumeral limb replaces the arms (above the elbow), in which customized sockets are created. In order to do this, a stump of the customer should be measured and the size of their artificial limb should be measured according to their physical data. After this, the “model of the stump” should be made to match the prosthesis with the stump, and then the permanent socket would be formed. Most of the pain comes from rubbing between the arms and the socket, in which pain occurs in the stump of the skin, in which may cause damage to some tissues. Overall, the socket should be tight with one other, the stump and prosthesis, and should be easily connected. These custom sockets can be made from a variety of style: belts,
