Why Listen? Parenting styles and approaches used today are not like the ones used 25 years ago. My experiences give me in sight into the parenting styles of today as well as yesterday. At age 2, I was adopted by parents who were near their 50’s. As I became an adult, I took some of the older generation’s values and combined them with today’s modern expectations. As a parent, creating a balance from both was important to me. The realization that communication between parents and children are imperative came from not being allowed to express myself to my parents as a teen. They didn’t want to hear anything, expressing my opinion was not allowed. It was their way or no way. Parents, do you listen to your child? Parents and Teens; Why Listen? In today’s society teenagers are far more outgoing and impulsive than 25 years ago. Today’s society brings about a less modest way of life for today’s teenagers from advertising, television shows, clothing designs, music, videos, the internet, their sexuality and much more. Our older generations didn’t see the changes that our generations have seen and the generation of our children. It is important to not only listen to your teen but to hear what they are saying. With the peer pressures today teens face more and more in the way of decision making. They listen to their friends, to the messages sent in the music they hear, the television shows they watch, the misdirection the internet can potentially provide and when in question, if they can’t ask you,
