Griffin Bourjaily 2 Task 3 What is unusual about the way in which Jan Van Eyck signed his name? Why might he have done this? The unusual thing about the way he signed his name is that the name on the bottom of the painting says “Jan Van Eyck was Present”. This indicates that he was serving as a witness to the wedding. Looking closely into the mirror in the background, indicate what you see? The mirror in the back shows a reflection of the wedding as well as another man that accompanied the couple in their marriage. The frame of the mirror held miniature images depicting the ten most important scenes from the life of Christ. Why does the dog play such a prominent position in the work of art? Identify and explain one other example of Renaissance symbolism The dog symbolizes the love and trust of the married couple. It also symbolizes fidelity. The dog gives something that couple has to take care of. The candle is shown twice, once burning to the left of a chandelier and once on the mirror.
