My name is John Williams. I was born in London, England in 1591. My father was a wealthy merchant. In 1606, he and several other investors organized a joint stock company they called the Virginia Company. They wanted to pool their capital and establish a colony in North America. King James granted them over six million acres of land in the new world. They hoped they could strengthen England at home and overseas by providing jobs and trade. In December of 1606, the ships Susan Constant, Discovery and Godspeed set off with 144 Englishmen for Virginia. They arrived at the Chesapeake Bay on April 26, 1607. They were attacked that night by a band of Indians severely wounded two men. It was an early warning to all that this paradise had many hidden dangers. A few weeks later, they settled down and built a fort on a small peninsula. It was located in Powhatan’s chiefdom. He was the chief of a nearby Indian tribe. It would be the first building in the new settlement, Jamestown. My father and the new settlers would skirmish repeatedly with Powhatan’s people. Finally, in June of 1607, the English and Powhatan would make peace overtures. Although the Indian raids had subsided considerably, by September, fifty colonists had died of disease or starvation.
