REVIEW FOR EXAM 1/ SOAA 1020 Terms to know and be able to identify Macro and Micro level of social interaction (which approach goes to which level) Macro-level orientation – a broad focus on social structures that shape society as a whole. Micro-level orientation – a close-up focus on social interaction in specific situations. Sociology – the systematic study of human society. Auguste Comte’s 3 stages of historical development: Theological(God, church in middle ages), Metaphysical (Nature, enlightenment), and Science(physics,chemistry & sociology), which he called positivism(a scientific approach to knowledge based on “positive” facts as opposed to mere speculation). Hunter and gathering Global Perspective / What creates a global culture? 3 levels of income(high, middle and low) Race Conflict / Edward DuBois (1 st black man to graduate Harvard) 4 ways to do research: Experiment, participant observation, and secondary data surveys 3 ways to do sociology: Positive, Interpretative, and Critical Science Theory – a statement of how and why specific facts are related. Agriculturalists – one who studies cultivation Pastoral and horticulturalist – domesticating animals and using hand tools to raise crops Culture – the ways of thinking, the ways of acting, and the material objects that together form a people’s way of life material culture – the physical things created by members of a society
