Level 4 Writing Improve your Writing by Enhancing your Vocabulary In academic writing, you need to use vocabulary that demonstrates a higher level of language. The table below lists some common words that are used in everyday English but are considered too informal for academic writing. This table also shows corresponding synonyms that can be used as suitable replacements. NOTE: when choosing a synonym, pay attention to part of speech and the meaning of the word. Check the meaning of the word in an English-to-English dictionary so that you use the synonym in an appropriate context. A variety of synonyms can be found in an online thesaurus such as www.thesaurus.com . (Space is also provided for you to add words as you learn them.)
