Scott Jones 3-7-07 Homework 3 This text is a news story from the New York Times about a small explosive that went off in Times Square. The event that is in question is the explosion of the bomb because no one knows who did it. 1. “Police officers at the scene said the explosion blew a hole through the front door of the recruiting station, which is at the northern end of the structure.” The grammatical subject is “the explosion” The semantic agent is the person responsible for setting off the bomb 2. At about 3:40 a.m. on Oct. 26, 2007, two dummy hand grenades that had been fashioned into crude bombs exploded outside the Mexican Consulate at 27 East 39th Street in Murray Hill, shattering windows. The grammatical subject is “the two dummy hand grenades” (“the dummy hand grenades… exploded”) The semantic agent is the person responsible for setting off the bomb 3. “The device had been placed in an ammunition box like the kind that can be bought at a military supply store.” Grammatically, the subject is the “the device”
