Culture in Image, Image in Culture 1. Introduction to our own culture In order to identify characteristic aspects of the German culture I used several theories of definitions of cultures such as ‘The different layers of cultures’ by Edgar Schein, Hall’s ‘Model of Cultural Differences’, Kluckhorn’s ‘Model of Basic Assumptions’ as well as Hofstede’s ‘Five Dimensions od Culture’. Firstly can state that, according to Hall, that Germans may be seen as a culture using low context. The Germans seem to use structured information which stays compartmentalized. Secondly, the German culture may also be categorized as a monochronic culture because they appear to be concentrated on one thing at a time, seem to value planning and keeping deadlines. Another aspect Hall uses to define a culture is the aspect of personal space which varies from culture and individual, according to Hall. In my opinion the German culture can be distinguished as low context culture. The personal space that is considered to be pleasant seems to be a half of an arm length. This is e.g. reflected in the greeting behavior of Germans. Kluckhorn uses the aspect of personal space in his ‘Model of Basic Assumptions’, too. According to Kluckhorn Germans would be then considered to value private space which can be detected in the office situation. Furthermore, Hall would consider the German culture to use slow information flow because the information they use are structured and compartmentalized. Again the importance of planning and structure is reflected. The final aspect Hall uses to define a cultures characteristics is the one of action chains.
