SOC100 – Summer 2011 GENDER VIOLATION EXERCISE INSTRUCTIONS You need to choose a gender violation and a place to “commit” the gender violation. You must have an observer with you whose job it is to carefully observe the reactions of others to your gender violation. The observer must pretend to be a stranger to you and should watch carefully for subtle, as well as obvious, signs of disapproval or ridicule (e.g. facial expressions, giggles, body postures, verbal comments, leaving the scene, etc). You must leave campus to do this. Possible activities include the following : Gender Violations for Men: Crying in public Knit or needlework in public Put on make-up in a public place Bring up a feminist topic in an all-male group Discuss feelings of fear or weakness in a male setting Gender Violations for Women: Buying a drink for a stranger at a bar Mimic group sexual harassment (e.g. shout at men) Give up seat on bus to healthy male Play sports with an all-male group Carry grocery bags for a male OR Choose a gender violation of your own,
