Ethics Dr. Carder 22 September 2010 Morality/Ethics: Analysis of Plato’s Euthryphro Euthryphro Part 1 1. The dialogue is set near the king-archon's court, where Socrates and Euthyphro encounter each other. They are both there for preliminary hearings before possible trials. 2. Euthyphro is prosecuting his father. 3. Euthyphro is prosecuting against his father because his father had allowed one of his workers to die by the effects of cold, hunger, and chain upon him and being thrown into a ditch. This worker had killed a slave belonging to the family estate on the island of Naxos; while Euthyphro's father waited to hear from the expounders of religious law (diviners) about how to precede, the worker died bound and gagged in a ditch. 4. Socrates is being prosecuted by Meletus, the deme of Pitthis. 5. Socrates is being prosecuted by Meletus because Meletus is accusing Socrates of corrupting his young friends. 6. The primary motivation for Socrates being prosecuted because Meletus states that Socrates is “a poet or maker of gods, that he invents new gods, and deny the existence of old ones”. Euthyphro believes that Meletus is accusing Socrates of being a neologian. Euthyphro Part 2 1. Socrates motivation is to learn from young Euthyphro. Since Socrates himself is facing a charge of impiety (a lack of religious respect, or an ungodly act) he expresses the hope to learn from Euthyphro, all the better to defend himself in his own trial. I would describe Socrates as a wise, respectable, and knowledgeable man. 2.
