Discussion Week 2 CIS 246 1. There is an alphabet soup of protocols in TCP/IP - HTTP,FTP,SMTP,POP3,TCP,UDP,IP,ARP,ICMP, and others. What are the characteristics of these protocols? What are they used for? Has there been an evolution in any of these protocols? Are there any weaknesses or disadvantages? When looking at the different protocols the POP3 is used to fetch emails for a server when the emails are stored. This is great for users because it does not take up local memory on the computer they are using at that time. The disadvantage of POP3 is depending on the security of the users email account spam and other virus can get through also. That is why it is important to have some kind of email security scan before opening unknown emails. Another protocol that needs to be looked at is the FTP this protocol has to do with exchanging files among computer on the same network. When downloading anything off a FTP is always better to be safe, than sorry and run a virus scan. This way you know that the file you are
